Introduction

Master Nguyên Duc Môc chose to not write a book or create a film explaining the techniques of the Son Long Quyên Thuat school. This text is therefore not a “manuel” describing in detail this martial art, but rather a brief explanation of the different parts of training. It is a summary of the work done in the Võ rooms and can therefore not replace the essential contact between Master and student.

"Litterature is as vast as the forest,
Võ is as vast as the ocean"

In the beginning, the Vô schools garded well their secrets: novices were only accepted if they were recomended by someone from the school and they had to match very strict criteria of admission. They were then tested for many years. The teaching was often incomplete so that the student could not really fight or turn against the school or his Master. Võ was used for self-defense against many aggressions as it was often the only way for villagers to defend themselves against thieves.

Võ was part of a brutal reality of everyday life: survival.

In the present day, civilisation, technology and communication methods have changed certain aspects of Võ.

It remains a very complete fighting technique, but is considered more like a sport that many people exercise for personal well-being. But Võ can be a path of neverending awakening which one may study their whole life.

Master Môc compares Võ to...
A rough diamond that you gradually carve to give it more and more value.

As a path of patience, perseverance and abnegation,
Võ leads to self-control and internal peace.

The technical programme of the Son Long Quyên Thuat school contains several domains: health, traditional techniques, artistic work, fighting research.

Võ contains six pillars: strength, soupleness, equilibrium, speed, precision, and the central pillar is mentality. Each pillar is of equal importance, they are inseperable and must rise together. Mentality is the “guardian of the temple” whithout which practicing Võ is nothing more than moving about with no real goal.
